Our public education system services over 1,500 students in one convenient complex and is AAA rated, the highest educational rating in Missouri. Students are exposed to computers and international languages at an early age. Achievement scores throughout the district typically range from .3 to .6 above national norms at every grade level. Over 55% of our district's graduates participate in some type of continued education, reflecting our commitment to education. We also offer a private Catholic elementary school where 55 students enjoy a teacher to student ratio of 1 to 10. Tri-County Christian School is a private school that runs K through 5th grade and has 70 students. They also have a preschool 2 years through 4 years old with 80 students.

Macon also offers classes in a variety of specialized skills at the Macon Area Vocational School and is near many of the finest public and private universities, colleges, and junior colleges in the Midwest. The people of Macon are convinced that a good education is a prerequisite to a good life.

An excellent public library holds over 32,000 books, 70 magazines, a large selection of audiobooks, and a collection of local history. The library was renovated to make it handicapped accessible along with a lift. There are 6 computers that are available for use by customers.

Macon is also a community committed to good health. The Samaritan Hospital, a modern, high-quality health care facility, serves the area with excellent health care. The hospital's commitment to growth has included recent additions in equipment, programs, and physicians. A variety of health care professionals reside in our community, with specialists as well as family doctors proudly calling Macon their home.

Macon boasts one of the lowest crime rates in America. In fact, it is so low, many people can't believe it. But it's true because we know that in Macon, a neighbor is also a friend.

We look out for one another. It also helps to have excellent city and county police forces as well as the regional office of the Missouri State Highway Patrol here. Our park system is one of the finest around with eight public parks, three public tennis courts, and two wading pools. As the county seat, we're also home to the Macon County Fairgrounds and a myriad of activities you'll enjoy there throughout the year. Festivities like old-fashioned ice cream socials, a family-style 4th of July celebration, picnics, and parades are all part of the heritage of our Midwestern lifestyle.

For the active sports enthusiast, Macon County is widely known for its excellent hunting, fishing, and water sports. Each year, hunters bag records numbers of wildlife in our fields and woods. We have many small ponds where you can catch bass or crappie. We have one of the finest Army Corp of Engineers lakes in the Midwest and nearly 25,000 acres of water where freshwater fishing, boating, skiing, swimming, and sunning are enjoyed throughout the seasons.
